A truly unique experience is navigating through the Panama Canal. The Canal is a man made waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It saves a lot of travel time for ships who don't want to go around all of South America. The toll to go through is very expensive. Traveling the canal is most easily done aboard a cruise ship. There are a series of locks that fill or empty with water to allow the boat or ship to reach the level of the other end of the canal. There is a lake in the center of the canal called Lake Gatun.
