Cartagena Columbia

We visited this beautiful city while on a trip with our son, Devin, and his wife Jeni and our grandson, Ammon.  This trip was Jeni's trip and she chose to go on a Panama Canal cruise that allowed us to visit some countries in Central and South America.    We loved this lovely city and the culture of the people of Columbia.

We saw some historic places and a lot of charming archways.  I loved the sites of this city, best seen on foot.

I collect nativity sets and so please indulge my pictures of the many unique sets that we saw in Cartegena.

This city historically has not had the best reputation and has been dangerous to travel to in the past.  Today the drug wars etc. have been neutralized here and it felt very safe.  I loved the views from the beach and I was amazed at some of the cultural differences. For example, in many places, the  most desirable homes are built on the bench locations where there is a beautiful view of the city.  The areas called slums are usually located in the inner city areas.  In Cartagena it is the opposite.  The best home are in the city center and the poor reside on the mountainside.  I asked our driver about this and he said that the hillside homes can be destroyed if there is a mudslide or by flooding and so the less expensive houses, or shacks are better suited for there.  I would visit here again when I had more time to soak up the feel of this unique city.
