The former Czechoslovakia is now the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This city is the 2nd largest in the country. The city name is pronounced Burn-o. From the hotel where we stayed we had a beautiful view of the city and I was struck with how many steeples you could see in the city. Our son-in-law Joe served as a missionary in this city and he said that despite the number of churches, most of the population is atheist. (about 90%). The government pays to upkeep the churches and no one goes to most of the Christian churches except for Christmas and Easter.
We were impressed by the extra effort that is put into the presentation of the food in the Czech Republic. It was delicious but almost too pretty to eat. Even the french fries were served with parsley sprinkled on them. Here are some of the items we enjoyed.
The dish that looks like Macaroni and Cheese with bacon on the top is called Haluski. It is a famous favorite in this country. Sometimes it is served with a sour kraut ingredient in it called Zelli. The dish pictured is made with goat cheese which I prefer to the zelli version. The noodles are made with potatoes and flour. I purchased a special tool to make these little dumplings that are similar to gnocchi in Italy.
The green casserole dish is an eggplant and chicken dish with a potato pancake that was similar to a tortilla.
